The Basic Gynecology Panel focuses on screening the two most common groups of pathogens causing gynecological inflammation:
1. Candida (Yeast):
Uses Wet Mount Microscopy (observing the sample under a microscope) to detect the presence of yeast cells or fungal hyphae. This is a rapid, classic method to diagnose fungal vaginitis. Typical symptoms include thick, white, odorless discharge, redness/swelling of the vagina and vulva, and burning pain during urination or intercourse.
2. Gardnerella vaginalis & other pathogenic bacteria:
Uses Wet Mount Microscopy to find “Clue Cells”—vaginal epithelial cells surrounded by bacteria. The presence of these cells is the specific hallmark for diagnosing Bacterial Vaginosis (BV). Typical symptoms include grayish or milky discharge with a fishy odor, along with vaginal pain or itching.
