1. HPV Panels and Costs

  • HPV 40 Panel: Provides comprehensive screening for 40 HPV types, including 2 low-risk types and 38 high-risk types. The 2 low-risk types are HPV 6 and HPV 11, which cause warts and papillomas in the genital, anal, or oropharyngeal areas. The 38 high-risk types include HPV 16 and HPV 18, which cause cervical, anal, and throat cancers.

2. Details on HPV Genotypes

2.1. High-Risk HPV Genotypes

High-risk HPV Genotype 16 is the most dangerous type, causing over 50% of cervical cancer cases, and requires close monitoring or immediate colposcopy upon detection. 

High-risk HPV Genotype 18 is capable of causing cervical adenocarcinoma with a rapid progression rate, making it the second highest-risk type after HPV 16. High-risk HPV Genotype 26 is classified in the potentially carcinogenic group; though less common, it requires periodic monitoring to control cellular changes.

High-risk HPV Genotype 31 is closely related to high-grade precancerous lesions, and its pathogenesis rate is second only to types 16 and 18. 

High-risk HPV Genotype 33 often causes severe epithelial lesions in the genitals, and detecting this type helps doctors predict pathological risks early. High-risk. 

HPV Genotype 35 is a common type among women with abnormal cervical lesions and plays an important role in screening for pelvic cancer risks. 

High-risk HPV Genotype 39 is often associated with prolonged infections that are difficult to self-clear, requiring continuous medical supervision to avoid complications.

High-risk HPV Genotype 45 shares biological characteristics with HPV 18 and often causes adenocarcinoma, making it a high-risk type that requires special attention during screening. 

High-risk HPV Genotype 51 is classified in the high-risk group that can cause genital warts or dysplasia, and its detection helps guide effective preventive treatment plans. 

High-risk HPV Genotype 52 is one of the most common types in Asia causing cervical cancer and is capable of causing very severe cellular damage. 

High-risk HPV Genotype 53 is considered a “potentially high-risk” type due to its frequent appearance in abnormal specimens, requiring further cytological testing to accurately assess its impact.

High-risk HPV Genotype 56 belongs to the high-risk group capable of causing cervical cellular lesions; detecting this type helps doctors determine the frequency of periodic screening. 

High-risk HPV Genotype 58 is a very common type in Asia, closely linked to cervical cancer, and often causes severe precancerous lesions. 

High-risk HPV Genotype 59 is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen with persistent survival capabilities, requiring close monitoring to avoid long-term complications.

High-risk HPV Genotype 66 was formerly classified as low-risk but has now been elevated in its warning level due to its presence in many pathological cases, demanding frequent cytological monitoring. 

High-risk HPV Genotype 68 is capable of integrating into human cellular DNA and promoting oncogenesis, making it one of the high-risk types requiring special attention. High-risk HPV Genotype 69 is a less common type but is still listed as capable of causing malignant lesions, and its identification helps personalize healthcare pathways.

High-risk HPV Genotype 70 is often associated with epithelial changes in the genital and anal regions; although it carries a lower risk than types 16 and 18, it should not be underestimated. 

High-risk HPV Genotype 73 is considered a “hidden” high-risk type with a genetic structure prone to causing disease, meaning periodic checks are needed to ensure it does not harm cells. 

High-risk HPV Genotype 82 is capable of causing malignant epithelial tumors, and early detection helps prevent its progression to cancer.

There are also Other HPV Types (specifically 30, 32, 34, 40, 42, 43, 44, 54, 55, 61, 62, 67, 74, 81, 83, 84, 87, and 90) which mainly comprise low-risk types that often cause genital warts rather than cancer. Infection with these types is of little concern regarding malignancy but requires symptomatic treatment if necessary.

2.2. Low-Risk and Other HPV Types

Low-risk HPV Genotype 6 is the primary agent causing about 90% of genital warts cases in both men and women. It almost never causes cancer but significantly affects aesthetics and quality of life. 

Low-risk HPV Genotype 11 is usually sexually transmitted, causing benign papillomas in the genitals or respiratory tract. It has a very low risk of causing cancer, but the recurrence rate after treatment is high.


3. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How often should I get an HPV test?

The frequency of HPV testing depends on your age and your vaccination status. If you are between the ages of 25 and 65, it is recommended to have a primary HPV test every 5 years. If primary HPV testing is not available, you can get screened with either a co-test (which combines an HPV test with a Pap test) every 5 years, or a Pap test alone every 3 years. If you have an abnormal Pap test result, your doctor may recommend more frequent HPV testing or other follow-up examinations.

Can men get infected with HPV?

Yes, men can be infected with HPV just like women. Signs of HPV infection in men often include genital warts (on the penis, scrotum, or anus), as well as warts on the tongue, mouth, and throat. Men who have sex with men are at a higher risk of HPV infection. However, there is no reliable HPV test for men available for home use, and most HPV tests are designed for women due to the virus’s role in causing cervical cancer. Regular HPV testing is not currently recommended for identifying abnormalities that can lead to anal, penile, or throat cancers in men. Even in a clinical setting, there is no approved HPV screening method for men.

What are the symptoms of HPV?

Most people with HPV do not experience any symptoms and are completely unaware they have it. When symptoms do occur, they can include the appearance of genital warts and abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix.
