You can contract the virus through contact with infected blood. Most people with HCV have no symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>Crucial Fact: There is currently no vaccine for Hepatitis C. The best prevention is avoiding high-risk behaviors.<\/p>\n<p>However, testing and treatment can prevent complications and stop transmission. Hepatitis C is curable in over 95% of cases. This virus has multiple genotypes (types 1 and 6 are most common in Vietnam). It spreads through blood, sexual contact, and from mother to child. It can be acute or chronic.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Epidemiology\"><\/span><b>2. Epidemiology:<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Hepatitis C is a global health issue affecting tens of millions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Global (WHO):<\/strong> Estimated 50 million people have chronic HCV, with 1 million new infections annually. In 2022, approx. 242,000 people died from HCV-related liver disease.<\/li>\n<li><strong>USA (CDC):<\/strong> In 2023, there were over 100,000 chronic cases and 11,000 deaths.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vietnam:<\/strong> Estimated 900,000 people with chronic HCV in 2021, causing nearly 5,000 deaths. High prevalence in high-risk groups: 30% in HIV+ individuals and 40-90% in people who inject drugs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Transmission_Routes\"><\/span><b>3. Transmission Routes:<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>HCV spreads primarily through direct contact with infected blood, even in tiny amounts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Injection Drug Use: Sharing needles or syringes is the #1 cause.<\/li>\n<li>Unsafe Medical Procedures: Unscreened blood transfusions (mostly before 1992) or unsterile medical\/dental equipment.<\/li>\n<li>Occupational Exposure: Needlestick injuries in healthcare.<\/li>\n<li>Tattooing\/Piercing: Using unsterile equipment.<\/li>\n<li>Mother to Child: Risk is low (&lt;10%).<\/li>\n<li>Sexual Contact: Risk is generally low but higher for MSM or those with multiple partners\/other STIs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Myth Buster: Hepatitis C is NOT spread through:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Breast milk<\/li>\n<li>Food or water<\/li>\n<li>Casual contact (hugging, kissing, sharing utensils)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Symptoms\"><\/span><b>4. Late symptoms indicate severe damage:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chronic fatigue.<\/li>\n<li>Easy bruising\/bleeding.<\/li>\n<li>Itchy skin.<\/li>\n<li>Fluid buildup in legs (edema) or abdomen (ascites).<\/li>\n<li>Confusion (hepatic encephalopathy).<\/li>\n<li>Spider-like blood vessels on skin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Risk_Factors\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>5. These antibodies typically appear about 8-12 weeks after infection. Post-Treatment Monitoring:<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Post-treatment follow-up is very important to confirm a cure and monitor for potential liver complications, especially in those who already have cirrhosis.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Confirmation of Cure (SVR &#8211; Sustained Virologic Response):\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">After completing DAA treatment, patients need to be retested for HCV RNA at 12 weeks (SVR12) or 24 weeks (SVR24). If HCV RNA is no longer detectable, the patient is considered cured.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Achieving SVR means the virus has been eliminated from the body, significantly reducing the risk of progressive liver disease and liver cancer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Monitoring for Liver Complications (for patients with pre-existing cirrhosis):\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Even after being cured of HCV, patients who already have cirrhosis remain at high risk of developing liver cancer and require regular liver cancer screening (liver ultrasound and AFP test every 6 months).<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Regular monitoring of liver function and the degree of liver fibrosis.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Counseling and Education: Counseling on measures to prevent HCV reinfection and other liver diseases (e.g., avoiding alcohol).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"10_Prevention\"><\/span><b>10. Prevention:<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Currently, there is <strong>no vaccine<\/strong> to prevent Hepatitis C. Therefore, prevention methods primarily focus on avoiding contact with blood and other body fluids contaminated with HCV.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Avoiding contact with HCV-contaminated blood:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><strong>Do not share needles:<\/strong> Absolutely do not share needles, syringes, or any drug injection equipment.
